In the Spotlight: Ben Wood Training to be an Installation Electrician

March 2020

Meet Ben, Wood our spotlight employee this month!

Ben has been with us at Elmleigh for over 4 years and is currently an Electrician’s Mate, and well on the way to becoming an Installation Electrician as he has nearly completed his NVQ Level 3 assessment programme with studies for 18th Edition and AM2 examinations!

Ben sat down with us and answered a couple of our questions so you can get to know a little more about him and why he works for Elmleigh:

How did you get into the Electrical Installation industry?

I probably found my way into the electrical installation industry due to the fact that when I was a child I was always intrigued with how things worked and with anything scientific. As I got older a close relative of mine employed me in the domestic electrical installation side of things, but my inner self soon wanted to obtain wider knowledge and I craved something more. Working with industrial electrical installations satisfies these needs.

How long have you been at Elmleigh, and what was the number one reason you joined our organisation?

I have been at Elmleigh now for just over 4 years and it's the longest period of time I have ever been at a company. I would usually get bored and feel each day is the same, but at Elmleigh there is such a variety of work to sink my teeth into. I mean, 4 years speaks for itself really doesn't it!

I joined Elmleigh because they specialise in the industrial sector and we are a recognised market leader with such a vast team of colleagues, from design experts all the way through to installation teams. Between us there is no task we cannot overcome.

Tell us about an average day in your role, if there is one!

An average day for me varies greatly. I could be stuck into a project giving it everything I have to meet our high quality of installation or I could be preparing for the next with the odd occasion of returning to the workshop and visiting our team of electrical designers and panel builders. They never cease to amaze me.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

In my spare time, I enjoy the simple things in life like going for long walks or relaxing at home. I also seem to find myself starting impossible tasks such as trying to invent a new revolutionary method to create electricity. Between doing these things I also adore chilli plants and watching them grow. It gives me great satisfaction. I've grown 150 varieties so far I can safely say, I'm a pretty happy man.
