The Challenge
A Global parcel sortation client approached Elmleigh to install a new vision-based system. This upgrade was implemented to increase the site’s production capabilities, improving freight traceability within the processing system.
The installation involved the integration of a SICK camera tunnel, bespoke conveyors supplied by a third party and an Elmleigh-manufactured control panel, which was designed, manufactured and tested before installation at our facility by our in-house technicians.

The Solution
- Our mechanical installation team lined, levelled and secured the conveyor system, ensuring seamless parcel flow with precision guide rails.
- Our electrical installation team integrated the new system, which was controlled by an Elmleigh control panel.
- The control panel had Siemens S7-1500 PLC, 9 DOL motors, 32 V SD motors, and an encoder for tracking parcels through the system, enabling it to process the freight more accurately. Eight Zone stop pull cords were commissioned to support product flow during peak times.
By improving the client’s throughput, this job’s success allowed for introducing and processing new freight in the facility. The new system reduced the possibility of error by having fewer manual decision points. Integrating SICK vision technology improved product traceability and the processing of the differing sizes of freight.
Due to the project’s success, the client approached our project manager to replicate the scope of work at another site with similar capabilities before the upgrade. Minor variations were made, such as adding more estops to the system (due to the increased length of the system), yet the installation followed the same principle.
