Employee Spotlight - Joe Tongue

Our Design Engineer Joe Tongue started with Elmleigh in January 2019 and in just these few short years, and with the added complication of remote working through the Coronavirus pandemic, Joe has diligently developed his design skills and control system understanding to the point that he now works through the majority of his projects with minimal supervision.

With such skills under his belt, and as a valued member of our engineering design team, we will continue to extend his knowledge on machinery safety and control system design through additional technical training for many more years to come!

As part of learning from our employee’s experience, we sat down together to ask some questions about her/his time at Elmleigh thus far as well as some fun questions at the end;

How have you enjoyed your time at Elmleigh?

I thoroughly enjoy my time working at Elmleigh. I get on really well with the other staff which makes coming to work all the more enjoyable!

What do you consider your biggest achievement at Elmleigh?

I would say my biggest achievement has been designing my own panel from scratch. I joined Elmleigh with no design experience so have trained up on the job. It felt great to see the whole job through from start to finish.

What new skills have you learnt on your journey so far?

I was previously a control panel test engineer for another company but wanted to get involved with designing control panels as it is something that always interested me. So I joined as Junior Design Engineer learning AutoCAD Electrical and moving on to EPLAN for modelling our designs. All of my skills relating to designing control panels have been acquired since working at Elmleigh.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

The best part is that every day is different which keeps me interested and enables me to learn new skills!

How do you balance your career at Elmleigh and family/personal time?

I try to find a good balance between work and my personal time. I’ve recently got married so try to spend as much time with my wife as possible. I’m also a season ticket holder at Leicester City and enjoy going to all the home matches, so I make the most of my evenings and weekends!

How has Elmleigh helped you in your career development?

They have trained me up from scratch as a Design Engineer. I have completed an EPLAN course and I continue to receive support on a regular basis as there is often something new that crops up that I haven’t come across before!

What does a typical day for you look like?

As a Design Engineer, most days can be quite varied, either liaising with the Project Managers to identify requirements of the job, covering the concept and design specifications of new projects or components, creating device I/O lists, using EPLAN to design and visualise projects, generating the bill of materials for our buying team to procure and communicating with the assembly workshop as a Control Panel I’ve designed goes through the build phase.

If given the chance, who would you want to be for one day only?

The GOAT, Jamie Vardy!

If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?

Tongue in cheek!

What three words best describe you?

Hardworking, thoughtful and honest.

Thank you Joe for your time and answers! We hope to spend much more time with you here at Elmleigh and help you to progress even further.
